John Pegum:Great question! And I think you have a large part of the answer. The social responsibility of researchers to disseminate their findings to a broader audience of the general public is what is behind a large part of the article promotion and scholarly communication boom we’re seeing in recent years. Of course, much of the scientific research that is conducted in academia is funded by various sources including public funds. It is the research groups obligation, in these cases, to be able to articulate the value and importance of these investments.

Shane Rydquist:What you need to remember is that you’re not really stepping away from reporting what you’ve done earlier as a researcher. You’re just simplifying the facts and constantly harping on words like “potentially” “possibly” and “probably.” As long as you spend more time talking about “what happened?” when you conducted your experiment, as opposed to “how it happened?” (because that is not something we can know for sure), then I suppose striking the balance would be simpler or more straightforward.

Danny Ward:A good technique is to evaluate and assess your research promotion. By recording how successful a particular platform or method of promotion is, you can better understand what are the most effective techniques. If you are sharing research to multiple platforms it may be best to identify which is the most effective method and to only use or prioritise use with that platform. For example, Facebook is a very popular global social media site however it is often not as effective for sharing research papers and so many researchers choose to share research on platforms such as Twitter or LinkedIn instead as they are more effective. The same goes for other online and offline communication activities. Evaluate what methods work best and prioritise using those methods over others.

Danny Ward:Communication of your research is often most effective as soon as possible. For example if you have published a paper, sharing and discussing that work right away will help to generate excitement and interest in your work. Some institutes and scientists may choose to communicate research at other times in addition to this such as at meetings, conferences or with website campaigns. A mix of both immediate communication and sustained communication later on can be effective.

Danny Ward:I think that once global travel becomes safe once again, conferences will resume as normal in person. I do think starting online conferences has started to make many people think that hosting online conferences may be a good additional thing to do as it allows people to attend who cannot travel. I don’t think the impact of academic conferences will be damaged, I think they are still very valuable for researchers. We may see traditional face to face conferences also have an online element for those who cannot attend in future.
